UN Body Urges India To Be On ‘High Alert’ Against Another Locust Attack

New Delhi: The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has warned India to remain on high alert against further locust attacks in the next four weeks.

Swarms of crop-destroying locusts first threatened Madhya Pradesh in early June and then moved to Bharatpur reserve forest in Koriya district of Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan.

In the last week of June, swarms of insects entered Gurugram before moving to parts of Delhi amid the worst locust attack that India is facing in 26 years. The damage was controlled thanks to effective measures being taken.

Now, FAO says locust swarms may return to Rajasthan during monsoon. “Early breeding has already occurred along Indo-Pakistan border,” FAO said.
