Berhampur: An undertrial prisoner died under mysterious circumstances in Bhanjanagar special sub-jail in Odisha’s Ganjam district on Saturday.
According to sources, the deceased prisoner was arrested by Bellaguntha police five days ago the charges of theft. He was identified as Charan Behera (40) of Tanrada village under the jurisdiction of Belaguntha police station.
Behera suddenly fell ill this morning and he was rushed to BHanjanagar hospital where doctors declared him dead. A team of police personnel reached the hospital and launched an investigation into the circumstances in which the jail inmate died.
After getting information, family members of the deceased also reached the hospital and alleged that he was beaten to death. Claiming that the body of the deceased had injury marks, they demanded compensation to the bereaved family.
