Berhampur: An undertrial prisoner (UTP) escaped by scaling the wall of a special sub-jail at Bhanjanagar in Odisha’s Ganjam district on Tuesday.
The UTP, identified as Babu Nayak, was allegedly involved in at least 40 criminal cases.
“We suspect he escaped from the backside of the jail using a rope ladder, with the help from outsiders,” said Senior Superintendent of Berhampur Circle Jail B B Patnaik said.
Nayak had been behind bars since August last year, he said, adding that he was involved in a bank dacoity at Manitara.
“We have intensified search to nab Nayak,” said Bhananagar SDPO Utkal Keshari Das.
All nearby police stations have been alerted, he added.
