Baripada: An undertrial prisoner (UTP) was reportedly found hanging in Baripada circle in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district.
The deceased was identified Rabi Singh (21) of Mahulia village under Sadar police limits in Baripada.
According to sources, Rabi was arrested by the Excise department personnel on December 20 in an illegal bootlegging case and was subsequently lodged in jail.
Rabi went to a secluded place at the backside of the jail on Sunday evening and allegedly hanged himself with a towel. Other jail inmates spotted him hanging later.
On being informed, a team of police personnel visited the site and registered a case in this connection (1/2024) and initiated a probe. Police have seized Rabi’s body and sent it to hospital for postmortem and a report is still awaited. Investigation into the incident is underway.
