Cuttack: Chauliaganj Police arrested a groom from the wedding mandap at Mahanadi Vihar here for allegedly tying the nuptial knot the second time without divorcing his first wife.
The groom has been identified as Priyaranjan Pati of Deula Sahi area in Tulasipur. He was arrested on the basis of a complaint lodged by his first wife on Wednesday evening.
According to police sources, Pati had a court marriage with the complainant on June 20, 2017, when he was working as an ATO at Khapuria ITI. The complainant was then studying in the same institution.
Even after three years, he did not make the marriage public and instead went ahead with his second wedding plans. “As soon as I got a whiff of his plan, I approached the police,” the aggrieved woman said. She also submitted all the documents, including marriage registration certificate, with the police.
The groom had reached the wedding venue at 7 pm. However, the rituals were stopped. midway after the complainant reached the venue with IIC Tapas Pradhan and social activists.
The family of the girl with whom Pati’s marriage was fixed, cooperated with the police and supported the complainant’s plea for justice, the sources added.
Further investigation is on.
