Guwahati: The debate over a proposed Uniform Civil Code in India is warming up.
After AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi opposed the UCC, saying it was not required in India, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma pitched for it strongly, asserting that it’s an issue for all Muslim women.
“Everybody supports UCC. No Muslim woman wants her husband to bring home three wives… do three marriages. Who would want that? This isn’t my issue, this is an issue for Muslim mothers and women,” Biswa Sarma told newspersons here.
There has been a growing call for introduction of UCC, especially from BJP-ruled states.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, too, has been advocating UCC.
Owaisi countered BJP’s push for UCC, saying even the Law Commission has said it’s not needed.
“Unemployment and inflation are on the rise and you’re concerned about the Uniform Civil Code. We are against it. The Law Commission has also said that UCC is not needed in India,” he said.
The Lok Sabha MP also mentioned the Goa Civil Code’s provision, which allows a Hindu man to have a second wife if she has attained the age of 30 without having a son.
“What will the BJP say about this? You are in power there,” he argued.
