Bhubaneswar: After remaining closed more than a fortnight, the Unit-II Market Building in Bhubaneswar reopened on Thursday, bringing cheers among traders as well as shoppers.
Though the conflict between Central Market Building Traders’ Association and the street vendors still remains unresolved, reopening of the market complex has given the much needed relief to people.
While the market complex reopened, some big showrooms are yet to open their shutters. They contend that the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is yet give assurance to the Central Market Building Association on their demand to evict street vendors from the premises.
The popular shopping destination Unit-II Market Building had been shut since July 17 as the shopkeepers launched a stir demanding eviction of the makeshift vendors from the premises.
Sources said a meeting between the representatives of the Market Building Association and the BMC officials is being held this evening in a bid to end the stalemate.
The shopkeepers under the banner of Market Building Association have been alleging encroachment by the makeshift vendors and demanding their eviction from the complex. The association had urged the BMC to take necessary action to evict the vendors claiming that they destroyed the atmosphere in the complex.
Accusing the BMC of having failed to take any action on their demand, the shopkeepers shut the market building for an indefinite period.
The street vendors, on their part, have been staging protests demanding arrangements to allow them to stay on the Market Building premises. Around 200 vendors run their business in and around the market building complex in Unit-II, sources said.
