Baripada: An unmarried old man committed suicide by jumping before a running train reportedly due to loneliness in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district on Sunday.
As per reports, the incident took place at Aanlajodi railway station under Rairangpur block of the district at around noon. The 65-year-old man, identified as Ranjit Sengupta of Gorumahisani of the block, came to the station in the morning and moved around for some time.
At around noon, when a MEMU train, going from Gorumahisani to Tatanagar, was crossing Aanlajodi Junction, he jumped before it and died on the spot. The GRP retrieved the body and sent it for post-mortem.
Though it has not been ascertained why Ranjit took the extreme step, the locals said his sister had expired two years back while younger brother Indrajit Sengupta, an advocate, died of cardiac arrest 4 months back.
Since Ranjit was unmarried, he had gone into depression amid loneliness after losing his brother and sister, they said.
