Actor Naseeruddin Shah’s remarks about the life of a cow being more important than that of a police officer on Thursday has triggered a row, bringing the Bulandshahr riots into national focus once again. In his opinion piece in the Scroll, senior journalist Sruthisagar Yamunan has slammed the Uttar Pradesh government for its perceived slackness in arresting the culprits responsible for the police officer’s death.
He felt chief minister Yogi Adityanath was interested in politics, not justice.
“The murder of the police officer has clearly become a low priority for the UP government,” he said, reminding that Bajrang Dal member Yogesh Raj, the main accused, is still at large.
If the Uttar Pradesh government falters in punishing those guilty of unleashing the violence, the Centre should take some stringent steps and possibly transfer the case to a central agency, Yamunan summed up.
