New Delhi: A 34-year-old man was arrested on Friday for allegedly kidnapping a five-year-old child, hailing from Odisha, from New Delhi Railway Station (NDRS).
The accused has been identified as Vikas Verma, a native of Hathras in Uttar Pradesh.
According to reports, the accused saw a woman, who had come from Indore on Wednesday morning to catch a train for Cuttack, waiting on a platform with three children. He first befriended the youngest child by offering him some eatables and then disappeared with him. Verma, a goldsmith by profession, took the child to Katra in Jammu the same night, and returned to NDRS the following morning and boarded Shri Shakti Express where he was nabbed. He was planning to take the child to his native place.
During investigation, police scoured CCTV footages from the station premises and spotted an unknown person carrying the kidnapped child, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railways) Apoorva Gupta was quoted as saying by PTI.
Verman had to shut down his business due to huge losses and heavy debt last year and had since been working as a vendor in trains. He had lost his child after separating from his wife in 2021, he added.
