Donald Trump’s latest victim in the ongoing US-China trade war is Chinese supercomputers.
China, which was recently leading the supercomputer race with its 93 petaflop capacity Sunway TaihuLight, had been overtaken by an American supercomputer that does 200 petaflops.
Now, the US has imposed trade restrictions on the export of China’s supercomputers stating that the companies involved in making them are “acting contrary to the national security or foreign policy interests of the United States.”
Industry experts say that this would cripple these Chinese businesses.
The US is reportedly worried about the likely military implications of a superior Chinese supercomputer. Supercomputers are a key element in the development of nuclear weapons, security, missile defense and encryption, according to the Wall Street Journal.
