Washington: Former US President Donald Trump, who was charged for inciting an insurrection at the US Capitol, was acquitted on Saturday. A majority of the Senate Republicans refused to penalise the former president in his historic second impeachment trial.
The five-day trial witnessed Democratic prosecutors argue — helped by dramatic January 6 riot video — that Trump’s action was not in line with his oath by whipping up his supporters into storming Congress in a last-ditch attempt to cling on to power, reported AFP.
Trump, who has been secluded in his Florida club since leaving office on January 20, welcomed the verdict and denounced the proceedings as “yet another phase of the greatest witch hunt in the history of our country.”
Despite being in such a situation, Trump hoped for a possible political future. “Our historic, patriotic and beautiful movement to Make America Great Again has only just begun,” Trump was quoted as saying by AFP.
“We have so much work ahead of us, and soon we will emerge with a vision for a bright, radiant, and limitless American future,” Trump said via a statement.
The House of Representatives impeached the former president on January 13.
