Bhubaneswar: The Utkal University in Bhubaneswar will organise the state-level Inter-University Athletic Competitions-2024 from February 15 to 19.
Giving details on the athletic meet at a presser on Monday, vice-chancellor of the university Prof Sabita Acharya said the event to be held under the auspices of the Higher Education department and the State Higher Education Council, is expecting around 1000 participants and nominated athletes from 38 universities of the state including event participants, coaches, faculty members and support staff.
Different events of the meet will be held at the Biju Pattanaik Sports Complex of Utkal University and Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.
The competitions include 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1500 meter race, high jump and long jump, javelin throw, discus throw, putting the shot, hurdle race and relay race. Each university can nominate 2 students for every event.
“The objectives of the competitions are to showcase the talents of our university students, to enhance team
spirit, demonstrate leadership and generate fellow-feeling and brotherhood,” she said.
The athletic meet will be followed by cultural programmes in the evenings during the event days at the Utkal University Convocation Hall. In addition to showcasing their athletic prowess, the participants can elevate their senses with rich Odisha culture, heritage and art forms.
The first day of the event will begin with an inaugural ceremony to be attended by Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak,
Minister of Higher Education, Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Co-operation; Aravind Agarwal, secretary, Higher Education and Olympian Anuradha Biswal.
The valedictory function be held on February 19 in the University Convocation Hall where the winners of the events will be felicitated with cash prizes, trophies and certificates. Bhubaneswar Mayor Sulochana Das will attend the closing ceremony.
