Phulbani: An undertrial prisoner (UTP) died while undergoing treatment at the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) of Kandhamal in Odisha.
The deceased, identified as Abhiram Dagyal of Dimirikuda village in Phiringia area of the district, had surrendered before police following a non-bailable warrant against him in a ganja smuggling case.
As per reports, Abhiram was subsequently sent to Phulbani Jail and lodged there as an undertrial prisoner.
However, he fell sick and his health condition deteriorated during his stay in jail. Abhiram was the admitted to the hospital where he succumbed to his illness on Wednesday.
Following Abhiram’s death, his family claimed that he was in proper shape before being taken to jail. They alleged that the death took place due to police torture.
According to Phulbani SDPO Suprasanna Mallik, said that the exact reason of death would be ascertained once the autopsy report is available.
