Baripada: Two jail guards were suspended after an undertrial prisoner (UTP) escaped while undergoing treatment at Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital here early on Saturday.
The UTP, identified as Kanhucharan Marandi of Bantalapada village under Badasahi block, was arrested on rape charges and lodged at Baripada Circle Jail.
On December 6, he fell ill and was admitted to the hospital.
On the pretext of attending nature’s call, Kanhu went to the toilet and escaped by scaling the wall of the hospital at around 4 am.
Following the incident, Baripada jail superintendent Niranjan Das suspended jail guards Satyabrata Behera and Manas Ranjan Rout for alleged dereliction of duty.
Meanwhile, a complaint has been lodged at Baripada town police station in this connection and a manhunt launched to nab the accused.
“Simultaneous raids are also being conducted to trace him,” said IIC of Baripada Town Police Station Ashok Nayak.
