Jajpur: An under-trail prisoner (UTP) has escaped from police custody while being taken from hospital to jail in Odisha’s Jajpur district.

According to sources, the UTP, Pratap Singh of Jahna village under Panikoili police limits was arrested a few days back for allegedly raping a woman and uploading her nude pictures in social media. He was housed in sub-jail, Jajpur Road in Ragadi under Korei block of the district.

As Singh fell sick, the jail officials and local police took him to the health centre at Jajpur Road for consultation with doctor on Saturday. Following treatment, while Singh was being brought back to the sub-jail in a vehicle, the police and jail officials stopped at Tentulikhunta square to have lunch in a hotel.

While all of them were having lunch, Singh managed to escape apparently as per a plan made earlier. Later, the jail officials filed a complaint about the escape of Singh at Korei police station.

The police have launched a manhunt to trace Singh and started investigation into the case.
