Uttarakhand To Be 1st State To Implement Uniform Civil Code On Jan 27

Dehradun: Uttarakhand is set to become India’s first state to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s secretary Shailesh Bagoli said on Saturday that January 27 will be the historic day for UCC implementation in the northern state.

The UCC portal will be launched at 12.30 pm on Monday at the Secretariat, a day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi visits Uttarakhand, ANI reported.

Modi has vowed to introduce UCC in the country, on the lines of the Uttarakhand policy.

UCC refers to a common set of laws across faiths and tribes, and govern issues such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and maintenance.

In the Indian Constitution, it is a part of the non-justiciable directive principles of state policy.

Days ahead of the implementation, Uttarakhand CM Dhami said the idea is not to target any person or community.

“There is no question of targeting anyone. We have made a uniform arrangement for all. Going forward, we will ensure that women, who make up 50% of the population are given more rights and protection. This law is oriented towards that,” Dhami said in an interview with Hindustan Times.

He added that his state will not spare any effort to identify and act against illegal immigrants from Myanmar and Bangladesh.
