New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal heaped praise on Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud for the Supreme Court’s verdict on Chandigarh mayoral polls.
Addressing the Delhi Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, Kejriwal drew parallels with Justice Chandrachud and Lord Krishna.
“We consider courts as temples. Serving justice is God’s work. This is why when a judge announces verdicts, it is considered God’s work in a way,” Kejriwal said.
“Whatever happened in the Supreme Court yesterday, it seemed as if Lord Krishna was also present in Supreme Court. There was God in the Chief Justice,” was how the Delhi CM praised the Chief Justice.
Kejriwal thanked Supreme Court for “saving democracy” in “difficult times”, referring to its judgment of overturning the Chandigarh mayoral election results and declaring the candidate of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as winner.
The Returning Officer had invalidated eight votes and announced BJP candidate Manoj Sonkar as winner on January 30. AAP challenged the result, and was ultimately vindicated.
The CJI-led three-judge Supreme Court bench – which also included Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra — had sought ballot papers and video of the vote-counting process to be produced in court. The top court found the eight ‘invalidated’ votes to be valid and ordered criminal prosecution of Returning Officer Anil Masih for misdemeanour.
