Very Heavy Rain, Gale@90Kmph & Storm Surge May Continue In Odisha Post Cyclone Dana Landfall

Bhubaneswar: Extremely heavy rain may continue to lash some districts of Odisha on Friday under the influence of the cyclonic storm Dana, which is expected to gradually weaken into a deep depression.

Storm surge of up to 1 metre may inundate low-lying areas in Bhadrak and Balasore districts during the next 3 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its midday bulletin.

It has also sounded red warning  of isolated heavy to very heavy rain (7 to 20cm) with isolated extremely heavy rainfall (>20cm) for Balasore, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar districts.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) may also occur at isolated places in Jajpur, Kendrapada, Dhenkanal, Cuttack. Yellow warning of heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) have been issued for isolated places in Angul, Jagatsinghpur, Khurda, Nayagarh and Puri districts till 8.30 am on October 26.

Yellow warning of heavy rainfall continues for isolated places in Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts during the subsequent 24 hours.

The weather agency further said that gale wind speed reaching 60-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph would prevail over Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Bhadrak and Kendrapada districts till October 25 evening and decrease thereafter. Squally wind speed reaching 40-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph may also prevail over Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Angul and adjoining areas of Sundargarh & Khurda districts during this period.

Sea condition is likely to be high to very rough till October 25 evening and improve gradually thereafter. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into Northwest Bay of Bengal and along and off Odisha coasts till October 25.

Lower Great Danger Singer 10 and Danger Signal 7 have been hoisted at Dhamra port, and Lower Great Danger Singer 10 and Danger Signal 5 at Paradip port and Local Cautionary Signal at Puri and Gopalpur ports.

Cyclone Dana crossed North Odisha coast close to Habalikhati Nature Camp and Dhamra during 1.30-3.30 am as a severe cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 100-120 kmph. The maximum sustained wind speed around the centre of the cyclone was about 80 kmph to 90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph. The landfall process was completed at 8.30 am with the storm about 30 km northeast of Bhadrak and 50 km north-northwest of Dhamra.

Impact expected in Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Jajpur, Cuttack and Dhenkanal

 Major damage to thatched houses/huts. Roof tops may get blow away.

 Minor damage to power and communication lines.

 Major damage to unmetalled and some damage to metalled roads. Flooding of escape routes.

 Possibilities of damage to vulnerable structure. Breaking of tree branches and uprooting of trees.

 Moderate damage to banana and papaya trees. Large dead limbs likely to be blown away from trees.

 Damage to horticulture and standing crops in some areas due to inundation and wind.

 Damage to embankments/ salt pans.

 Localised flooding of roads, waterlogging in low-lying areas and closure of underpasses mainly in urban areas.

 Occasional reduction in visibility due to heavy rainfall.

 Disruption of traffic in major cities and roadways due to waterlogging

 Localised landslides/mudslides/landslips/mud slips/land sinks/mud sinks.

 Likely disruption of marine and inland water transportation like small boats and trawlers.

 It may lead to riverine flooding in some river catchments
