Very Heavy Rain May Lash Khurda, Cuttack & Puri Tomorrow; IMD Issues Orange Warning

Bhubaneswar: While predicting formation of a low pressure area over north Bay of Bengal around August 18, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday sounded orange warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall for several parts of Odisha for two days from August 17.

According to midday bulletin, heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) is likely to occur at one or two places in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Malkangiri, Koraput and Nabarangpur till 8.30 am on Thursday. There is also a  warning of thunderstorm with lightning for one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Khurda, Puri, Nayagarh, Gajapati, Ganjam, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Angul, Dhenkanal, Boudh, and Kandhamal districts.

The intensity of rain is likely to increase thereafter.

August 17

Orange warning

Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) may occur at isolated places in Puri, Khurda, Cuttack, Angul, and Sambalpur.

Yellow warning

Heavy Rainfall (7 to 11cm) is also likely at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Nayagarh, Gajapati, Ganjam, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal, Deogarh, Bargarh, Boudh, Sonepur, Nawarangpur, Malkangiri and Koraput.

August 18

Orange warning

Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) very likely at isolated places in Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Balangir, Nuapada, Nabarangpur, Malkangiri and Koraput.

Yellow warning

Heavy Rainfall (7 to 11cm) may also occur at one or two places in Khurda, Puri, Boudh, Sonepur, Nayagarh, Gajapati, Ganjam, Rayagada, Cuttack, Sambalpur, Bargarh, and Jharsuguda.

The IMD has warned of temporary water logging in low-lying areas, poor visibility during intense spells of rain and traffic congestion in urban areas. There is also a possibility of wall collapse of vulnerable kutcha houses and some damages of kutcha road. Landslides are also likely in vulnerable hilly areasin Malkangiri, Koraput, Gajapati, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi and Kandhamal districts.

On August 19, the weather agency has forecast heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) at one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Nuapada and Bargarh districts. There is no further warning thereafter.
