Puri: Popular artist, comedian and theatre director Nityananda Das passed away at a private hospital here late on Wednesday following a massive heart attack. He was 83.
Soon after his demise, his body was taken to the Annapurna Theatre where several artists and eminent personalities had his last glimpse.
The mortal remains of Das were later taken to his residence at Bali Sahi and finally to the Swarga Dwara for cremation.
The veteran artist had dedicated his life to the theatre and was active from 1957 to 1990. He had begun his theatre innings with ‘Badua Jhia’ which earned him the recognition of a stand-up comedian. He has also acted in comic roles in more than 10 Odia movies.
Das has also directed over 50 dramas and plays.
He was conferred with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2006.
