Baripada: A Special Vigilance court has sentenced a retired sub-inspector (SI) of police to rigorous imprisonment in a bribe case in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district.
The Vigilance had caught Sarat Chandra Ray, retired SI of Tiring police station in the district accepting bribe of Rs 7,000 from a complainant and arrested him. Following investigation, the Vigilance filed chargesheet in the court.
The Special Judge, Vigilance, Baripada convicted Ray in the case and sentenced him to undergo rigorous imprisonment (RI) for a period of 5 years and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 for the offence under Section 13(2) r/w 13(1)(d) of PC Act, 1988. In default of payment of fine, the convict has to undergo further RI for 5 months, the judge ruled.
The court further sentenced Ray to undergo RI for 3 years and imposed a fine of Rs 3,000 for the offence under Section 7 of PC Act, 1988. In default of payment of fine, he has to undergo further RI for 3 months. Both the sentences will run concurrently, the court ordered.
