Chennai: Tamil Nadu chief minister Joseph Vijay on Wednesday announced several perks for the state’s MLAs. According to his announcement in the House, all MLAs will be given a government car, fuel allowance and secretary.

He has announced that the MLAs will get a government vehicle to help them with their constituency related works. “MLAs need to travel to their constituencies frequently to address people’s problems. Government vehicle will ensure transparent and corruption free governance,” the CM announced in the Assembly.

The MLAs will get Rs 75,000 per month for the driver’s salary and car-related expenses.

The government will additionally provide Rs 25,000 per month to hire an assistant in each MLA’s office, reported India Today.

Earlier, VCK MLA Jothimani had said MLAs couldn’t work effectively without the required logistics support. She had requested cars for the MLAs.

A senior DMK MLA told TOI that successive governments had ignored similar requests from legislators

“The government provides vehicles to municipal and union chairpersons, mayors and deputy mayors, but MLAs do not enjoy the same facility,” an MLA, quoted in an India Today report, said.
