Ahmedabad: Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani on Saturday met Governor Acharya Devvra and tendered his resignation.
While speaking to mediapersons, he, however, parried questions about the reasons behind his resignation. “I served as the CM for five years which is a long time,” he said.
Rupani, who assumed office after replacing Anandiben Patel in 2016, completed five years of his tenure last month.
Quoting sources, NDTV reported that it is a “course correction” by the BJP ahead of elections next year.
Mansukh Mandaviya, who was sworn in as the Union Health Minister in July, and Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel are being touted as possible replacements for Rupani, the report added.
Rupani is the second BJP CM to be replaced after BS Yediyurappa in Karnataka and Tirath Singh Rawat in Uttrakhand.
Yediyurappa had announced his resignation on July 26 and Basavaraj Bommai was sworn in as Karnataka’s 30th chief minister two days later.
Rawat tendered his resignation to Governor Baby Rani Maurya on July 2, ending his tenure just four months after he took oath.
