Chennai: Vijay’s much-awaited film ‘Jana Nayagan’ is witnessing a strong response even before its theatrical release.
The film has reportedly crossed the ₹15 crore mark in advance bookings within 48 hours, with several shows selling out days ahead of its release.
By Tuesday, July 21, ‘Jana Nayagan’ had reportedly sold more than six lakh tickets for its opening day across India, setting the stage for one of the biggest openings for an Indian film this year.
The film is also set to receive one of the widest releases for an Indian movie, with around 8,000 shows scheduled across the country, including more than 3,500 in Tamil Nadu alone.
The number of screenings is expected to increase further ahead of its release on July 23.
According to Sacnilk, the Vijay-starrer had recorded ₹13 crore in advance bookings for its opening day by 9 PM on Monday.
By Tuesday morning, trade estimates suggested that the figure had risen to approximately ₹15 crore.
Globally, the film’s advance bookings for its opening weekend have reportedly crossed ₹27 crore.
The overwhelming demand has reportedly left theatres in Tamil Nadu struggling to keep pace with ticket bookings.
A source from the Theatre Owners Association, quoted by PTI, said there was “tremendous pressure” on theatres as fans rushed to secure tickets.
Advance bookings in Tamil Nadu opened on July 19 and received a massive response, with single-screen theatres and multiplexes collectively selling more than 90,000 tickets within just a few hours of the window opening.
Directed by H Vinoth, Jana Nayagan marks Vijay’s final film before he makes a full-time transition into politics.
The film was initially scheduled to release in January but was postponed after facing delays in securing certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
The political action drama features a stellar ensemble cast, including Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj and Narain.
