Rayagada: Movement of vehicular traffic was disrupted for several hours on JKPur-Kalyansingpur road in Odisha’s Rayagada district as two brothers were killed after a van ran over them on Sunday.
According to sources, the brothers, identified as Bulu Beniya (37) and Manoj Beniya (25) of Rampur village under Kolnara block of the district had gone to Rayagada town on some work in the morning. While they were returning to their village in the afternoon, a pick-up van coming in high speed from opposite direction collided with them near Getipada bridge on JKPur-Kalyansingpur road.
On the impact of the collision, the two brothers were thrown off the bike and fell on the road at a distance. Both of them died on the spot after sustaining injuries on head, the sources said.
Though the locals tried to stop the van, its driver sped away. Though the villagers with the help of police managed to intercept the vehicle at a distance, its driver managed to escape.
Following the accident, the villagers staged a road blockade at the site demanding adequate compensation for the family of the deceased brothers. As vehicular movement on the road was disrupted due to the blockade, a team from Chandili police station led by IIC Yashwant Hial went to the spot.
The police seized the van and tried to pacify the agitated villagers. Though they requested the locals to withdraw the road blockade, the latter continued the stir demanding compensation.
