Villagers Stone Maoist Cadre To Death In Odisha

Malkangiri: A Maoist cadre was allegedly stoned to death by some locals at Janturai village under Papermetla police limits in Malkangiri district late on Saturday.

According to sources, two ultras rode to the village in a motorcycle and warned the villagers against celebrating Republic Day. They also fired in air to terrorise the people.

The unexpected then happened and the villagers, who had been opposing violence and obstruction to construction activities in the area, started pelting them with stones. Caught unawares, they tried to flee but in vain. One of them reportedly died on the spot while the other sustained critical injuries.

Briefing the media, Malkangiri SP Rishikesh Khilari said that a wanted Maoist was killed in the face-off with the locals. “Another Maoist with bounty of Rs 4 lakh on his head was captured after he suffered injuries. They were hindering developmental works in the area and the villagers were not happy with it,” he added.

The SP said that security forces found them lying unconscious and rushed them Chitrakonda hospital, where doctors declared one of them as brought dead.

The injured has been identified as Jipra Hatrika, a native of Narayanpatna and the deceased as Ganga Madhi, a native of Kalimela. Both were members of Guma Area Committee.

Meanwhile, security in the village has been beefed up to avert any retaliatory attack by the Maoists, the sources added.
