Sambalpur: In a unique celebration of ‘Raksha Bandhan’, the people of several villages in Odisha’s Sambalpur district tied ‘rakhi’ to trees and took resolution to protect them.
The women members of Vana Suraksha Samiti (VSS) at Bindupur under Nakatideula block, led by sarpanch of Jamujori panchayat Reena Bisi, tied rakhis to trees in Rairakhol forest range of the district.
Besides the VSS members, women of different villages under the panchayat and volunteers of NGOs involved in environmental activities participated in the programme.
Speaking on the occasion, sarpanch Bisi said it has been a tradition in the area to celebrate Raksha Bandhan by tying rakhis to trees by the women. “Jungle provides us everything that we need including food, shelter and firewood. It is also a source of livelihood as many people sustain on its sources. As a respect to the contribution to our life, we worship the trees and promise to protect those on this auspicious day,” she added.
