Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia To Contest Haryana Polls On Congress Ticket

New Delhi: Wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia, joined the Congress Wednesday afternoon and will contest Haryana’s  Assembly election scheduled to be held on October 5 news agency ANI reported citing sources. They are likely to resign from their current positions, ANI added.

Phogat and Punia met Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday, after which news of their political and electoral debut was confirmed.

Notably, Phogat and Punia are leading protests against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, a BJP MP and former federation chief accused of sexually assaulting athletes. Singh was also a BJP MP at the time but was denied a ticket to defend Uttar Pradesh’s Kaiserganj Lok Sabha seat.

The BJP, instead, filled his son, Karan Bhushan Singh, who won the seat.

Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia also met with Congress general secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal in New Delhi on Wednesday, Hindustan Times reported.
