Bhubaneswar: After pulling off one of the greatest upsets in Paris Olympics 2024, India’s Vinesh Phogat advanced to the semifinals of the Women’s Freestyle 50kg by defeating 2019 European Champion of Ukraine on Tuesday.
Vinesh took the early lead and won 7–4.
Earlier in the day, the 29-year-old had stunned reigning Olympic Champion Yui Susaki in a dramatic turnaround in her opening wrestling bout to seal a quarterfinal berth. The thriller saw her beating the World No 1 by 3-2 in the final seconds of the game.
Yui Sasaki has four world championship golds to her name, won in 2017, 2018, 2022 and 2023. She is also the reigning Asian champion, having lost just three bouts since 2015.
Vinesh is now just one win away from confirming her first Olympic medal. She will face Cuba’s Yusneylys Guzman in the semi-final.
