Bengaluru: An allegedly derogatory social media post on Prophet Muhammed resulted in violence in Karnataka capital Bengaluru that killed three persons and left several others injured, after police open fired late on Tuesday night.
The clash broke out in DJ Halli area after the protesters accused Congress MLA R Akhanda Srinivas Murthy’s kin of purportedly uploading a defamatory post about Prophet Muhammed on his Facebook account.
According to Times Now, the mobs gathered outside the house of the Congress MLA from Pulakeshinagar and hurled stones and torched several vehicles. The mob attacked a police station in DJ Halli area and had also gathered outside the legislator’s residence.
It is learnt that the locals Initially went to the police station to lodge complaint against the MLA’s nephew. Lackadaisical attitude of the cops reportedly enraged the mob, following which they attacked the police station. Reports said that the crowd also attacked a DCP.
The police used lathicharge, tear gas and firing to disperse the violent crowd. Around 60 cops were reportedly injured in the violence. “DG Halli and KG Halli saw violent incidents. To bring this under control, police used lathi charge, tear gas and firing. Police Commissioner went to the spot. Police bandobast is in place. Strict action will be taken against those offenders,” the Bengaluru police tweeted.
Around 24 four-wheelers were set on fire and 200 bikes that were burnt have been kept at a police station.
Section 144 has been clamped across Bengaluru. B Bommai, the state home minister said that nobody will be allowed to take the law into their own hands.
