Wall Street Journal Report Hints Facebook India Is Biased Towards BJP Politicians

New Delhi: A report published in the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), quoting unnamed officials, alleges that a top Facebook India official is opposed to taking down hate-speech posts by a BJP MLA.

The article, titled ‘Facebook’s Hate Speech Rules Collide With Indian Politics’, says that an executive of Facebook India is against banning Indian politician T. Raja Singh from FB, saying that the move could hamper the company’s position in India.

Raja Singh has been advocating, through Facebook posts as well as in public appearances that Rohingya Muslim immigrants should be shot. He has also branded Muslims as ‘traitors’ and threatened to raze mosques.

Facebook later clarified that they enforce policies on hate speech on everyone, irrespective of his background.

“We prohibit hate speech and content that incites violence and we enforce these policies globally without regard to anyone’s political position or party affiliation. While we know there is more to do, we’re making progress on enforcement and conduct regular audits of our process to ensure fairness and accuracy,” a Facebook spokesperson said.

No reaction was available from Facebook India on one of its officials having reportedly opposed the move to ban Raja Singh.
