Bhubaneswar: Taking a jibe at the Centre over excise duty cut on petrol and diesel, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday tweeted that the decision was taken out of fear.
Buckling under pressure, the BJP-led government at the Centre on Wednesday announced to reduce excise duty on petrol by Rs 5 per litre and that on diesel by Rs 10 a litre to give reprieve to consumers. The new prices are effective from Thursday when the country is celebrating Diwali.
Not only Priyanka, but netizens also attributed this decision to the drubbing that the saffron party faced in the recent by-elections.
Of the 30 assembly bypoll results declared on November 2, the BJP won seven seats, the Congress got eight seats and regional parties 15.
The party scored a victory in all five seats in Assam but suffered defeat in West Bengal, Assam and Rajasthan. The saffron party wrested Prithvipur and Jobat from the Congress but lost Raigaon to the Hand party in Madhya Pradesh.
