Sambalpur: Mushim Akhtar, a wanted criminal, was injured in an encounter with police in Sambalpur city early on Monday.
According to sources, a joint team of Dhanupali police and a special squad had raided City Station Road area following a tip-off that Akhtar was present there. Seeing the policemen, Akhtar fired at them twice and injured an assistant sub-inspector. Police retaliated and Akhtar was hit by a bullet on his right knee.
Police later arrested Akhtar and seized a 9 mm pistol, a bullet and Rs 4000 in cash from his possession. He was administered preliminary treatment at the district headquarters hospital and then police took him to an unknown location for interrogation.
Police said Akhtar has over 15 criminal cases pending against him in different police stations in Sambalpur district.
