Sambalpur: A dreaded criminal Amit Sahu was arrested after he was injured in an encounter with the police on the outskirts of Sambalpur city on Friday evening.

Acting on a tip-off about the presence of Amit near a temple in Khetrajpur, a police team raided the area. In a bid to escape, Amit opened two rounds of fire at the police but he sustained bullet injuries on his left leg after the police retaliated.

Police later seized a pistol and a live bullet from his possession and admitted him to the district headquarters hospital.

According to police, Amit had recently kidnapped a trader and demanded a ransom of Rs 60000 for his release. The family members of the trader later lodged a police complaint.

Amit has nine criminal cases pending against him at various police stations in Sambalpur, police said.
