Kendrapara: A history-sheeter was injured in an encounter with the police in Odisha’s Kendrapara district late on Monday.
The injured criminal has been identified as Ganesh Mallick.
Giving details to the media here on Tuesday, Kendrapara SDPO, Rajib Lochan Panda said Ganesh had come to his village Halapur to attend the Saraswati Melana. Based on this tip-off, a team from Sadar Police station led by the IIC raided the village in the night.
Seeing the police, Ganesh opened fire on them in a bid escape. But he fell off his motorcycle after a bullet hit him in the right leg. He was admitted to the district headquarters hospital and later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack after his health deteriorated.
Police seized a country-made revolver and six live cartridges from his possession.
The SDPO further said Ganesh had over 40 cases of theft, dacoity, rape, attempt to murder and extortion pending against him at several police stations in Kendrapara, Balichandrapur, Jagatsinghpur, Rourkela, Jajpur, Cuttack and Khurda. “The police were after him since 2015,” he added.
