Imphal: A village in Manipur’s Ukhrul district was rewarded for voluntarily destroying poppy plants as part of the state government’s ‘war on drugs’ campaign.
Handing over a cash reward of Rs 10 lakh to Peh village authorities in Imphal on Monday, Chief Minister N Biren Singh lauded the villagers for their resolve to destroy poppy plantation and urged them to create awareness on the campaign in neighbouring villages.
He reiterated his government’s commitment to curb drug abuse and trafficking in Manipur.
The government, he assured, will provide assistance to villagers as an alternative to poppy plantation and advised villagers to consult officials and experts on the suitability of other crops on their soil.
