Surat: Two people were killed after a fire broke out at a packaging unit at Vareli in Kadodara here on Monday morning.
The incident took place around 4.30 am when the workers of the Viva Packaging Company were working on the fifth floor.
Deputy Superintendent of Police, Bardoli Division, Rupal Solanki confirmed the death of two persons. However, reports suggest that some people reportedly jumped off the building to escape death.
The blaze erupted on the first floor of the unit and soon spread to other floors, Kadodara police inspector Hemant Patel told Times Now.
More than 10 fire engines were rushed to the spot to extinguish the flames.
People could be seen in a video calling out for help and waving to draw the attention of the firefighters.
Around 125 people have so far been rescued by the fire department, sub-divisional magistrate KG Vaghela told the media. Among them, more than 100 people, who were trapped inside the building, were pulled out by the hydraulic lift.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, said officials.
