Balasore: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) tested a long-range Supersonic Missile Assisted Torpedo (SMART) from Wheeler Island in Odisha coast on Monday.
The full range capability of the next-generation missile-based standoff torpedo delivery system was successfully demonstrated during the test. The missile carried a torpedo, parachute delivery system and release mechanisms, official sources said.
“The system has been designed to enhance anti-submarine warfare capability far beyond the conventional range of the torpedo,” the DRDO was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
According to officials, the system is being developed to be used by the Indian Navy.
On October 2, various systems of Abhyas and its high-speed expendable aerial target (HEAT) was flight-tested in Chandipur.
