New Delhi: An IndiGo aircraft was grounded at the Delhi airport after one of its engines caught fire on Friday night, seconds before taking off for Bengaluru.
According to sources, the incident took place around 9:45 pm and the passengers were not immediately evacuated. A video on Twitter showed one of the plane’s engines on fire and sparks flying at the time of taxiing at the airport.
Delhi police officers said the control room at the airport received a call from the CISF control room regarding a fire in the engine of the IndiGo plane. The pilot of a SpiceJet flight that was behind the IndiGo aircraft in the lineup while taxiing alerted the Air Traffic Controller about the fire in the engine, added sources.
The passengers got off the plane after 11 pm and were accommodated on another flight around midnight.
All passengers and crew on board IndiGo flight 6E-2131 are safe, the Delhi Police said. There were 184 people on board the Airbus A-320 aircraft.
In a statement, IndiGo said, “An aircraft operating flight 6E2131 from Delhi to Bangalore experienced an engine stall during the take-off roll. The take-off was aborted, and the aircraft safely returned to the bay.”
“All passengers are being accommodated on an alternate aircraft. We regret the inconvenience caused to the passengers,” it added.
Meanwhile, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said the flight has been grounded for an inspection and a detailed investigation will be carried out to ascertain the cause.
