Bhubaneswar: Hours after #BoycottBingo trended on Twitter, ITC Foods issued a statement claiming that the advertisement was shot in October 2019 and released now as the product launch was delayed due to COVID-19.
“A completely false, erroneous and mischievous message is being posted/circulated alleging that an advertisement of Bingo! is making fun of a late Bollywood celebrity. Such kind of erroneous messages is knowingly spreading falsehoods. We request you to not fall prey to such mischievous posts. The recent Bingo! the advertisement was shot more than a year ago in October 2019. It is being aired this year because of the delay in the launch of Bingo! Mad Angles Cheese Nachos and Bingo! Mad Angles Pizza due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” a spokesperson said.
Social media users took offence as they considered that words like ‘photon’, ‘algorithm’ and ‘paradox’ were used in the advertisement, featuring Ranveer Singh, to take a jibe at late actor Sushant Singh Rajput, who was interested in space and quantum physics.
