Kolkata: The convoy of BJP national president JP Nadda was allegedly attacked with stones and bricks while on its way to Diamond Harbour near Kolkata on Thursday.
Several cars in the convoy, including that of BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya and West Bengal BJP chief Dilip Ghosh, were damaged in the attack. About 10 BJP leaders, including Vijayvargiya and Mukul Roy, received minor injuries.
Following the incident, the BJP accused the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamul Congress government of “serious lapses in security”. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has asked for a report on the incident.
Later speaking to the media, Nadda said, “It is a shame on democracy. There isn’t a car in our convoy which was not attacked. I am safe because I was travelling in a bulletproof car. This state of lawlessness and intolerance in West Bengal has to end.
“If I have reached here for the meeting, it’s due to Ma Durga’s grace,” he added.
Nadda is on a two-day visit to Bengal as the BJP prepares an aggressive campaign for the Assembly election in the state due next year.
