Berhampur: The Assistant Sub-Inspector of police (ASI) Gopal Das, who allegedly fired on Health Minister Naba Das at Brajarajnagar on Sunday, was reportedly being treated for “psychological issues” for the past 7-8 years and under medication.
Speaking to the media, his wife Jayanti said that he made a video call to their daughter around 11 am. “I could not speak to him this morning as he cut the call to attend to another call. I got to know about the incident from news channels. He was being treated for mental issues but was doing fine. He had no anger issues.” she said.
Jayanti further that her husband had visited them 4-5 months back. “I do not know whether he had any enmity with Naba Das,” she added.
The ASI, a native of Berhampur, fired two rounds at the minister when he stepped out of his car at Brajrajnagar to attend an official programme. Das collapsed after a bullet hit him in the chest.

While the policeman has been taken into custody, the motive behind his action is still not clear. The ASI had served as the minister’s personal security officer (PSO) a few years ago, sources said.
