Balasore: An injured dolphin calf, which was released in deep sea after treatment, was found dead on Chandipur sea beach of the district on Wednesday.
The local fishermen had spotted the dolphin calf lying motionless on the beach during the high tide on Tuesday morning. On a close observation, they found injury marks on its head apparently sustained after it was hit by fishing trawlers.
The fishermen applied some ointment and bandaged the wounds. But the dolphin did not move to go to the sea after the treatment. In order to help it go back into the sea, the fishermen took the dolphin during the low tide in the afternoon and released it. But they found the dolphin calf’s body washed ashore on Wednesday morning.
On being informed, Forest officials reached the spot and took the dolphin’s body for post-mortem.
It may be noted that the carcass of a full-grown Dolphin was found on the bank of Chilika lake on Tuesday.
