Bhimsen: At least 22 coaches of Sabarmati Express passenger train derailed between Kanpur and Bhimsen stations in Uttar Pradesh early Saturday morning. The train was travelling from Varanasi to Ahmedabad (19168).
According to officials, the accident took place after the train’s engine struck an object on the tracks. There have no reports of injuries so far.
“22 bogies of Sabarmati Express have derailed but no one is injured,” ADM city, Kanpur Rakesh Verma, told ANI. The engine got badly damaged after some boulder hit the front portion, said the loco pilot.
At least seven trains were cancelled and three diverted on the route due to the derailment. According to the railways train enquiry website, the derailment occurred around 2:29am on Saturday, about 30 minutes after the train left Kanpur Central station. On the same track, another train from Patna to Indore had crossed uninterrupted around 1:20am.
Emergency services, including buses, were rushed to the accident site to transport the stranded passengers.
Stating that an object placed on the track led to the accident, Union railways minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, said, “Sharp hit marks are observed. Evidence is protected. Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Uttar Pradesh police are also working on it.”
