Cuttack: Police have arrested the husband of a former corporator in the city for duping people of lakhs of rupees by promising them houses in the Andarpur Integrated Housing and Slum Development Project.
Speaking to media person, here on Saturday, ACP Cuttack Zone-VI Amarendra Panda said the arrested person, Raja Karan alias Niman Karan of Andarpur under Madhupatana police limits, had issued forged documents (photocopies) of an affidavit made before a Notary to 33 people.
The matter came to light after Samir Pal, a mechanic of Khalagaon under Balikuda police limits in Jagatsinghpur district, filed an FIR against Raja, the husband of former corporator Ranjita Karan, at Madhupatana police station on February 22.
Samir alleged in his FIR that the accused had assured him of allotment of a house under Integrated Housing and Slum Development Project. Raja told him to deposit Rs 2.5 lakh for the house. After Samir paid Rs 2.30 lakh in three instalments to Raja, the latter showed him a house and even handed over the keys. As Raja did not make physical hand-over of the house, Samir demanded his money back.
The ACP said Raja had duped around 33 people of lakhs of rupees in similar manner. He had given copies of duplicate document of allotment of houses under the project to them.
After those people came to know that the documents were duplicate and did not have legal sanction of their ownership of houses, they vacated the houses and filed complaints at Madhupatna and Jagatpur police stations.
