Bhubaneswar: After a gap of 21 years, Harnaaz Sandhu will bring home the Miss Universe crown. Lara Dutta was last crowned the Miss Universe in 2000 while Sushmita Sen was the first to win the title in 1994.
The 21-year-old beat out 79 other contestants from various countries and territories to claim the prestigious title.
While Twitterati have criticised Steve Harvey for asking Harnaaz to do her best animal impersonation while the other 15 finalists were given a chance to talk about their accomplishments, this was the moment that set her apart from others as the Chandigarh girl took the question in her stride and let out a few impressive “meows” in front of millions of viewers.
“Jokes and giggles aside, asking a miss universe contestant to meow on stage is just weird. Harnaaz handled it with a sporting spirit, so really, hats off to her. And my girl won that crown as well. Congratulations!” wrote a user.
“Ridiculous that #HarnaazSandhu was asked to meow on stage but boy that girl was on confidence adrenaline… !!” wrote another user.
“LOL Whyyy they do that to us #MissIndia #meow superrr awks. But she was still confident- so props to Harnaaz!” wrote another.
Harnaaz is an advocate for women’s empowerment and helped her mother teach women’s health and hygiene at camps. She has also acted in two Punjabi films which will be released soon, Insider reported.
