New Delhi: What was earlier believed to be a meteor shower, which lit up the night sky over Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh on Saturday, has now taken a curious turn.
Astronomer Jonathan McDowell speculated that what was sighted could be a Chinese rocket stage, launched in February last year, burning up on re-entry.
In a tweet, McDowell, astronomer at Center for Astrophysics, said, “I believe this is the re-entry of a Chinese rocket stage, the third stage of the Chang Zheng 3B serial number Y77, which was launched in Feb 2021 — it was expected to re-enter in the next hour or so and the track is a good match.”
While there is no official confirmation yet, there are reports that remnants of a rocket fell in Ladbori village in Sindewahi Chandrapur, Maharashtra. According to the reports, villagers found multiple large metal pieces, including a 10×10 feet metal ring that fell behind the panchayat building of the village.
