Mexican president molested

New Delhi: In a shocking and outrageous incident, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum was harassed in public by a man on the streets of Mexico City.

The President was greeting citizens and speaking to them when a man groped her, and tried to kiss her before a member of the Presidential security intervened.

In a video that has gone viral on the internet, a man who appeared to be intoxicated approached Sheinbaum, placed one hand on her shoulder, and attempted to kiss her neck. He also tried to touch her body from behind with both hands.

As the surprised President turned around, security personnel steered the man away. Sheinbaum, who could be heard saying, “Don’t worry,” even agreed to take a picture with the man and patted him on the back.

The incident took place on Tuesday. A day later, Sheinbaum filed a police complaint after realising the man had continued to harass other women.

“My view is that if I don’t file a complaint, what will happen to other Mexican women? If they do this to the President, what will happen to all women in our country?” the President said at a press conference.

“This person approached me completely drunk… I don’t know if he was on drugs. It wasn’t until I saw the videos that I realised what had really happened,” she revealed.

Sheinbaum said that the government will review whether the man’s behaviour “is a criminal offence in all states, because it should be a criminal offence, and we are going to launch a campaign.”

Sexual harassment is punishable by law in Mexico City.

According to United Nations data, around 70 per cent of Mexican women aged 15 and over experience at least one incident of sexual harassment in their lives.
