Mumbai monorail stuck

Mumbai: Incessant rainfall over two days has thrown life in Mumbai completely off gear.

Streets in and around Mumbai were inundated, with cars submerged and people having to wade through waist-high water in many places, flight services were majorly disrupted, many trains suspended, schools and colleges closed as a red alert was issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Mumbai and several other districts.

Mumbai’s Monorail services were also hit by the inclement weather.

A monorail train got stalled in the evening, with nearly 100 passengers stuck inside the compartments for more than an hour.

The monorail, which runs on an elevated track, got stuck due to a power outage amid heavy downpour, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) said.

The train came to a halt around 6.15 pm, between Chembur and Bhakti Park stations.

Passengers contacted the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s helpline number 1916 for assistance in the emergency situation.

The Mumbai Fire Brigade rushed to the spot and began rescue operations with the help of three snorkel vehicles.

Many passengers complained of suffocation as doors remained shut and air-conditioning not working.
